European Mental Health Week 2026 is not only a time for awareness but also for high-level discussions on the future of mental health in Europe. One of the key events will take place at the European Parliament on 5th May 2026 at 15.00, organised by the Mental Health Europe organisation, bringing together policymakers, experts, and civil society to reflect on progress and discuss what comes next for mental health policy in the EU. The event focuses on the need for a coordinated, rights-based approach that prioritises prevention, reduces inequalities, and ensures access to quality care across Europe.
At the same time, the European Commission, Health and Food Safety
Directorate-General highlights another urgent issue: the growing impact of digital environments on mental health – especially among young people.
Digital technologies and social media offer many benefits, from connection to learning opportunities. However, as emphasised, “too much, unintentional screen time can harm our mental and physical health.” This is particularly relevant for adolescents, whose social and cognitive development is still ongoing.
Public concern is also increasing. According to recent data, more than 90% of Europeans believe that stronger action is needed to protect children from the negative effects of social media.
In response, the EU is taking steps to create a safer digital space. One key measure is the Digital Services Act, which requires online platforms to better protect users, including their mental well-being.
The EC stress also the importance of digital literacy. Helping young people understand how platforms work – including algorithms and online behaviours – can support healthier habits and more conscious use of technology. The goal is to promote “a healthier, more mindful digital experience.”
At the same time, responsibility does not lie only with institutions. Parents, teachers, and communities all play a role in supporting young people. Open conversations about online life, social pressure, and digital habits are essential.
